Most parents who walk into our Pre-Primary wing for the first time ask some version of the same question. It's rarely about the syllabus. They want to know whether anyone here will actually know their child.
It's the right question. A three-year-old can't come home and tell you she felt lost at snack time, or that nobody noticed he needed the washroom. You have to trust the adults in the room. So here is who they are, what a morning looks like, and how you'll hear from us.
The Shri Ram Universal School, Sarabha Nagar (TSUS) is a CBSE school (affiliation no. 1631479) in Block D, behind Main Market. Our Early Years cover Pre-Nursery, Nursery, LKG and UKG. For 2027-28, Pre-Nursery and Nursery seats are still open but filling, and LKG is full. Parents call it play school, playway, preschool or kindergarten. The name matters less than what happens between 7:50 and 12:40.
The first few weeks: settling in
Some children walk in on the first day and don't look back. Others hold on to your hand, or your dupatta, for a week. Both are normal, and we plan for both.
At TSUS Sarabha Nagar, new children start with 1 to 1.5 hours a day. Once they've settled (usually within 15 to 20 days), they move to the full day, which in summer is 7:50 am to 12:40 pm. Each morning they are met by the same familiar faces: their teachers and their didi. The didi isn't a teacher. She's a helper who stays with the class all day. She takes children to the washroom, cleans them up when needed and helps with anything else a little one needs. Soon she knows which child needs a hug at the door, which one insists on carrying his own bag, and who will only eat once someone opens the tiffin for her.
When you meet our educator during admission, tell her the small things. What calms your child down. What word they use for the toilet at home. It makes the first morning a little less strange for a very small person.
You won't be left guessing about how it's going, either. The class teacher keeps you posted through the first days. After the first month, every new family sits down with our admissions team, the academic coordinator and the vice principal to talk about how it's going. If you'd like to meet the principal as well, she's happy to see you.
What a morning looks like
The day begins at 7:50 am with Circle Time. Children sit together, greet each other, sing a rhyme and talk about the theme of the week. For a shy child, saying good morning to the whole circle is a real step, and teachers notice when it happens.
After that comes a short, focused block: phonics, early numbers and hands-on sensory work. Then it's time to move. Outdoor play, sand and water, the discovery corners. Every day has Wonder Time, set aside for the questions children ask (and three-year-olds ask plenty). There's art, music, role-play and a snack break. DEAR time, which stands for Drop Everything And Read, runs for fifteen minutes across the whole school, so even our youngest see that reading is something everyone does.
The morning closes with a story and a calm pack-up. Pre-Primary children go home at 12:40 pm.
How we come to know each child
Across TSUS Sarabha Nagar we keep a 1:10 teacher ratio. Each Nursery and KG section has 15 to 20 children and always 2 teachers, plus a didi who helps with washroom trips, cleaning up and anything else a little one needs. Adults who see the same children every day will notice the quiet child as well as the loud one.
There are no formal exams in Nursery, LKG or UKG. Teachers watch how a child understands, applies and tries. Does she count the blocks or guess? Did he go back to the puzzle after it fell apart? That tells us more about a four-year-old than any test paper could. Teachers keep a record of each child's learning and of their physical and social growth, and share it with you through the year.
Show & Tell and Role Play give children a regular chance to speak in front of the group. Some days that's a confident little speech. Some days it's a whisper and a toy held up. We count both.
Learning through play, and what it actually builds
Parents sometimes worry that "play-based" means not much learning. It's a fair worry, so here's what we mean.
The play is planned. Our Pre-Primary programme at TSUS Sarabha Nagar follows the curriculum and teaching approach of The Shri Ram School, Delhi, which we work with through Shri Educare Limited. It covers phonics, number readiness, sensory exploration, art and role-play, built around the idea that children are clever in different ways. With Art Integration, a child learns shapes and colours with paint and clay in her hands, before she ever meets them on a worksheet. With BALA (Building As Learning Aid), our walls and corridors are designed to teach as well.
By the end of UKG we want a child who can sit and listen, ask a question without being scared to, recognise letter sounds, handle numbers with some ease and walk into Grade 1 looking forward to it.
Laying the groundwork
Parents often ask us about 21st century skills. At three and four, they start small. A child learns to speak up in English at Circle Time and Show & Tell. She learns to name a feeling and wait her turn, which is where mindfulness and emotional intelligence begin. There's music and art, and early hands-on play with STEM and literacy: counting blocks, doing puzzles, listening for letter sounds.
That's what we mean by a holistic, nurturing start. We look after how a child feels, speaks, plays and gets along, not just what she knows.
The bigger things come later. As children move up through the school, they go on to our labs and learn things like robotics, AI, drones and rocketry. Nobody is flying drones in Nursery. Here, they're learning to hold a crayon, ask a question and feel safe at school. That's the right place to start.
Safety on a 3-acre campus
The school sits on three green acres in Sarabha Nagar. The campus is covered by CCTV round the clock and guarded day and night. Every staff member, including didis, bhaiyas and housekeeping, goes through a background check and regular safety training.
A full-time nurse runs our infirmary. She won't give your child any medicine without calling you for permission first, and in an emergency you're informed straight away.
If your child comes by school bus, our air-conditioned buses cover all of Ludhiana. Teachers and caretakers travel on them, and at drop-off your child is handed only to the adult carrying the photo ID card we issue to you.
Staying in touch with you
You'll hear from us through ShriConnect, our school ERP, a WhatsApp group for your child's grade, and the school diary that comes home in the bag. There are regular Parent-Teacher Meetings, and report cards twice a year.
If something is worrying you in between, ask to meet the teacher. You don't have to wait for a PTM.
Timings and the practical bits
At TSUS Sarabha Nagar, Pre-Primary runs from 7:50 am to 12:40 pm. Grades I to X run from 7:50 am to 2:30 pm. The Pre-Primary uniform is a House T-shirt with navy blue shorts. On birthdays, children can come in a birthday dress and share a simple chocolate with the class. No cakes, no return gifts. We'd rather the day felt special without becoming a competition.
What comes next: Grade 1
UKG children move up into Grade 1 at TSUS Sarabha Nagar automatically. There's no fresh admission, because admission happens only once, when your child first joins us. In Grade 1 the day runs until 2:30 pm. The thinking stays the same. In the junior grades children are still assessed on understanding, application and effort, and formal exams begin only in middle school.
What grows is the range of things to try: Discovery Hour, DEED (debate, extempore, elocution and drama), and from Grade 1, timetabled time in our STEM and Digital Literacy labs, where older students build robots. There's no rush. It will all be there when your child is ready.

Frequently asked questions (Early Years)
What age should my child be for Nursery, LKG or UKG at TSUS Sarabha Nagar? At TSUS Sarabha Nagar, for 2027-28, counted as on 31 March 2027, your child should be about 2 to 2.5 years old for Pre-Nursery, 3 for Nursery, 4 for LKG and 5 for UKG. Grade 1 starts at 6. If your child's birthday falls close to the cut-off, call us and we'll talk it through.
Is there a test or interview for Nursery admission? No. TSUS Sarabha Nagar has no admission test for Nursery, LKG or UKG. You and your child will meet one of our educators for an informal conversation, mostly so we can get to know your child and answer your questions. Nobody is going to ask a three-year-old to recite the alphabet.
What if my child cries every morning at drop-off? Many do in the first weeks, and it usually passes. At TSUS Sarabha Nagar, new children begin with 1 to 1.5 hours a day and move to the full day once they've settled, usually within 15 to 20 days. The same teachers and didi greet them every day, so there's a familiar face at the door. Keep goodbyes short and cheerful, and talk to the class teacher. We'll tell you honestly how your child is after you leave.
How many children are in a Pre-Primary class? At TSUS Sarabha Nagar, each Nursery and KG section has 15 to 20 children and 2 teachers. There's also a didi in every section, who helps with washroom trips, cleaning up and anything else a little one needs. The school keeps a 1:10 teacher ratio overall. You're welcome to see a class in session when you visit.
Does my child need to go to a play school before joining Nursery at TSUS Sarabha Nagar? No. At TSUS Sarabha Nagar, admission depends on your child's age and on seats being available, not on earlier schooling. Plenty of children start school with us in Nursery. If your child has been at a playgroup, that's fine too. Just tell us what they're used to.
Is the school bus safe for a three-year-old? The air-conditioned buses at TSUS Sarabha Nagar cover all of Ludhiana, and teachers and caretakers travel on them every day. Attendance is recorded morning and afternoon. At drop-off, your child is handed only to the adult showing the photo ID card we issue to your family. Ask us for the route that covers your address.
How will I know how my child's day went? At TSUS Sarabha Nagar, you'll hear through ShriConnect, the WhatsApp group for your child's grade and the school diary, plus regular Parent-Teacher Meetings and report cards twice a year. If you're worried about something, ask to meet the teacher. You don't need to wait for the next PTM.
What happens after UKG? Your child moves into Grade 1 at TSUS Sarabha Nagar automatically, with no fresh admission, and school runs until 2:30 pm. The learning stays hands-on, children are still assessed on understanding, application and effort, and formal exams begin only in middle school. From Grade 1, children also start timetabled time in our STEM and Digital Literacy labs.
