"Should we start with a play school, or go straight to Nursery?" Almost every Ludhiana parent who walks into our admissions office with a two or three year old asks us this. It is a good question, and the honest answer depends on your child's age and on what you want the next few years to look like.
As Admissions Head at The Shri Ram Universal School, Sarabha Nagar, I would like to explain the difference in plain words, so you can decide calmly for the 2027-28 session.
A play school is usually a standalone centre for the youngest children. Nursery is the first proper class of a school's early years, and it leads on to LKG, UKG and Grade 1 in the same place. Both should be built around play. The main difference is what comes after.
| Question | Standalone play school | Nursery in a school (TSUS Sarabha Nagar) |
|---|---|---|
| Typical age | Varies by centre | Pre-Nursery from about 2 to 2.5 years, Nursery at about 3 years |
| What comes next | A fresh admission at a new school | LKG, UKG and Grade 1 on the same campus |
| Change of setting | Child settles twice, once at play school and again at the new school | Child settles once, with the same campus and familiar faces |
| Board and curriculum path | Depends on the next school you choose | CBSE school, with labs from Grade 1 |
A good play school gives a small child a first, gentle step away from home. Children learn to share, wait their turn, sit for a story and say goodbye to a parent at the gate. That matters a great deal.
The catch is that a play school ends. When your child is ready for the next class, you apply to schools all over again, and your child has to settle into a new building, new teachers and new friends.
Nursery is still about play, songs, stories and talking. A three year old should not be sitting at a desk all day. What changes is that the play has a clear direction. Each activity is planned so that it leads, step by step, towards the reading, counting and confidence your child will need in LKG and UKG.
At The Shri Ram Universal School, Sarabha Nagar, our approach is holistic. We look at the whole child: how they speak, move, make friends, handle feelings and begin to think things through. When we talk about 21st century skills at this age, we mean simple, real things: asking questions, working with a friend on a floor game, trying again after a mistake, and telling the class about something they made.
You can read more about our classes and day on our Early Years page.

Play with a purpose: counting, taking turns and talking together.
Many families chose a play school because their child was too young for Nursery. From the 2027-28 session, we are starting Pre-Nursery for children of about 2 to 2.5 years. A few admissions have already been done.
This gives you a third option. Your child can begin in a small, nurturing class at the age most children start play school, and then move to Nursery, LKG and beyond without changing schools.
If your child will be about 2 to 2.5 years old, Pre-Nursery is the right class to look at. At about 3, it is Nursery. Not sure where your child fits? Our 2027-28 age guide explains how to count your child's age.
If most of your answers are yes, starting in a school's Pre-Nursery or Nursery is usually the simpler choice.
Nursery seats for 2027-28 are open but filling. LKG for 2027-28 is already full, which is one reason many parents now prefer to start early in the same school rather than wait.

Small hands, big learning: sorting by colour.
The first few mornings can bring tears, and that is normal. In our experience, most children settle within 15 to 20 days. Our teachers keep the routine predictable and warm, so children know what comes next and feel safe. Starting once, in one place, means this settling period happens only once.
No. Many children start directly in Pre-Nursery or Nursery. What matters is that your child is the right age for the class.
From the 2027-28 session, Pre-Nursery starts at about 2 to 2.5 years. Nursery is for children of about 3 years.
No. LKG seats for 2027-28 are full. Nursery seats are open but filling, and Pre-Nursery admissions have started.

There is a one-time registration fee of Rs 1,000. It is separate and is not adjusted against other fees. Please contact admissions for the fee structure.
