Choosing a Nursery School in Ludhiana

When choosing a nursery or play school in Ludhiana, judge three things: how safe your child will be, how the teaching actually works for a three-year-old, and whether the fees are explained clearly and in full. The best test is a visit at drop-off time, with a list of questions in hand. Here is that list, with the answers you will get at The Shri Ram Universal School, Sarabha Nagar as an example.

If you are still deciding between a stand-alone play school and Nursery inside a school, read our earlier post, play school vs Nursery in Ludhiana. This post is for the next step, when you have a shortlist and want to compare.

Part 1: Safety questions to ask

A small child cannot tell you what went wrong at school. So the adults around them, and the systems behind those adults, matter more than anything else. Ask these questions plainly. A good school will be glad you did.

Who is with the class all morning?

Ask how many adults stay in the room, and whether they are the same people every day. Ask who takes children to the washroom.

At Shri Ram Sarabha Nagar, each Nursery and KG section of 15 to 20 children has 2 teachers and a didi. The didi is a helper who stays with the class all day, takes children to the washroom, cleans them up when needed and helps with anything a little one needs.

Are staff background-checked?

Ask whether every adult on campus is checked, not just teachers. Our staff, including didis, bhaiyas and housekeeping, all go through a verified background check, and safety training is compulsory.

What happens if my child is unwell?

Ask whether there is a nurse on campus and what the medicine policy is. Our full-time nurse will not give your child any medicine without calling you for permission first, and in an emergency you are told straight away.

How is the campus watched, and who can collect my child?

Our campus has 24/7 CCTV and is guarded round the clock. If your child takes the school bus, the AC buses have GPS, CCTV and a female attendant, and at the stop your child is handed only to the adult carrying the photo ID card the school issues to your family.

Part 2: Questions about the teaching approach

Almost every nursery says it is play-based. The question is whether the play is planned. Here is how to tell.

Ask to see a timetable for one morning

A good morning has a rhythm: a calm start, a short focused block, time to move, stories and a quiet end. At our school, the morning begins with Circle Time, then a short block of phonics, early numbers and sensory work, followed by outdoor play, sand and water, art, music, role-play, a snack break and Wonder Time, when children's own questions lead. DEAR time, Drop Everything And Read, runs for fifteen minutes across the whole school.

Ask how children are assessed

Three-year-olds should not sit exams. Ask how teachers notice progress instead. There are no formal exams from Pre-Nursery to UKG at Shri Ram Sarabha Nagar. Teachers watch how a child understands, applies and tries, and keep a record of learning and of physical and social growth.

Ask how a shy or tearful child is helped

Settling in tells you a great deal about a school. At our school, new children start with 1 to 1.5 hours a day and move to the full day once settled, usually within 15 to 20 days. After the first month, every new family meets the admissions team, the academic coordinator and the vice principal to talk about how it is going.

Ask where the approach comes from

Our Pre-Primary programme follows the curriculum and teaching approach of The Shri Ram School, Delhi, through Shri Educare Limited. Art Integration means shapes and colours are learned with paint and clay before worksheets, and BALA (Building As Learning Aid) means the walls and corridors are designed to teach too.

Part 3: Questions about fees

Fees for nursery and play schools in Ludhiana vary widely, and the headline number is rarely the whole picture. Ask for:

  • The one-time charges, such as registration and admission
  • The recurring fee, and how often it is paid
  • Transport charges for your area
  • What is included, such as activities, and what is extra
  • What is refundable, and what is adjusted against later fees
  • How fees can be paid

At The Shri Ram Universal School, Sarabha Nagar, the registration fee is a one-time Rs 1,000, separate from school fees and not adjusted against them. Contact admissions for the fee structure. We go through the full break-up in person, including transport, and fees can be paid by bank transfer, UPI, card, cheque or online through ShriConnect, our parent portal.

Part 4: Practical things that matter every day

  • Timings: our Pre-Primary day runs 7:50 am to 12:40 pm in summer, and starts an hour later in winter.
  • Distance: a short ride matters more for a three-year-old than for anyone. Check our schools near you page for bus areas.
  • Staying in touch: ask how you will hear about your child's day. We use ShriConnect, a grade WhatsApp group and the school diary, with regular PTMs.
  • What comes next: in a school, UKG children move into Grade 1 without a fresh admission, which saves a second round of applications.

Frequently asked questions

What age should my child start nursery in Ludhiana?

At our school, age is counted as on 31 March of the year of admission: Pre-Nursery about 2 to 2.5 years, Nursery 3 years. Our age guide explains how to work it out.

Is it safe to send a three-year-old to school?

It is, when the right adults and systems are in place. Look for the same familiar adults every day, a helper for washroom trips, CCTV, background-checked staff and a nurse on campus.

They vary a lot from school to school, so ask each one for a full written break-up. At Shri Ram Sarabha Nagar the registration fee is Rs 1,000; contact admissions for the fee structure.

Will my child have exams in Nursery?

Not at our school. There are no formal exams from Pre-Nursery to UKG. Teachers observe and keep records, and share them with you through the year.

My child cries at drop-off. Will that pass?

For most children it does. At our school, children usually settle within 15 to 20 days. Our new children start with 1 to 1.5 hours a day, and the class teacher keeps you posted through the first days.
