Primary Years in Ludhiana: What Grades 1 to 5 Look Like

Primary Years at The Shri Ram Universal School, Sarabha Nagar cover Grades 1 to 5 on the CBSE curriculum (affiliation 1631479). Classes are generally 20 to 30 children, with about 1 teacher for every 10 children across the wing. From Grade 2, every child also has a weekly STEM Lab period with Myra Academy, included in the fees, and begins learning German. For 2027-28 there are a few seats left in most grades.

Parents of a six-year-old ask different questions from parents of a three-year-old. You still want to know that someone knows your child by name. Now you also want to know whether reading and maths are really clicking, what fills the week, and whether the school will still feel right at age ten. This post walks through the five Primary years in plain words.

What changes when a child moves into Grade 1

Grade 1 is the first year that looks like "big school". The day has a timetable, there are notebooks to look after, and children start to work on their own for longer stretches. Most six-year-olds handle the change well when three things are in place:

  • a class teacher they know and trust, who is the first person you speak to about anything;
  • a class small enough for that teacher to notice when something is off;
  • a week that still has plenty of doing, moving and talking, not only writing.

Grades 1 to 5, one year at a time

Every child grows at their own pace, so read this as a rough map rather than a checklist.

GradeWhat parents usually notice
Grade 1Reading simple words and sentences, writing short lines, counting and simple sums, and getting used to a full timetable
Grade 2Reading with more confidence, longer pieces of writing, more mental maths. At our school, this is also the year the weekly STEM Lab period and German begin
Grade 3Reading to learn, not only learning to read, and many more questions about how things work
Grade 4Stronger opinions, friendships that matter a lot, and more responsibility for homework
Grade 5Children who can plan, explain and present their own work, and who are getting ready for Grade 6

Class size and the teacher ratio, explained clearly

Two numbers often get mixed up, so here they are side by side:

  • Class size: generally 20 to 30 children in a class.
  • Teacher ratio: about 1 teacher for every 10 children, counted across the whole wing. It includes the class teachers and the subject teachers children meet through the week. It does not mean three teachers in every classroom.

When you compare schools, ask each one which of these two numbers they are quoting. Our post on how to compare CBSE schools in Ludhiana has more on this.

The STEM Lab from Grade 2

The STEM Lab, run with Myra Academy, is a regular period in the timetable from Grade 2. Every week, children have time set aside for it, and it is included in the school fees, with no extra charge.

In broad strokes, it grows with the child:

  • Grades 2 and 3: hands-on building and simple experiments, with the focus on trying, testing and explaining.
  • Grades 4 and 5: bigger projects that bring in more technology, and more time spent planning and presenting work.

This is what we mean by 21st century skills in the Primary Years: a child who can test an idea, try again when it does not work the first time, and explain to a classmate what they did. Our students are also national finalists in HackAIthon, an AI hackathon. They cleared the online first round and are now preparing their AI projects for the in-person national final. Read more on our STEM Lab page and in our post on robotics, AI and STEM for kids in Ludhiana.

German from Grade 2

Children start German in Grade 2. At seven, most children copy new sounds happily and are not yet worried about getting a word wrong, which makes it a good age to meet a new language. We will write more about German in a later post.

A week that is about more than the timetable

A holistic primary education should mean something you can check: in the same week, does a child read, work on maths, build something with their hands, run around outdoors and get a chance to speak in front of the class? Ask any school to describe a real week for a Grade 3 child, hour by hour. The answer tells you a lot. You can see ours on our Primary Years page, along with sports and co-curricular activities.
