Primary Years (Grades 1 to 5) at The Shri Ram Universal School, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana

Parents of a six-year-old ask different questions from parents of a three-year-old. You still want to know that someone here knows your child. But now you also want to know whether they are really learning to read, whether maths makes sense to them, whether the day is full of good things, and whether the school will still feel right when they reach Grade 5.

The Shri Ram Universal School, Sarabha Nagar (TSUS) is a CBSE school in Block-D, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana. Our Primary Years run from Grade 1 to Grade 5. Here is how those five years work, in plain words, along with answers to the questions Ludhiana parents ask us most.

For 2027-28 we have a few seats available in every grade from 1 to 5.

Classes your child can be known in

No Primary class at TSUS Sarabha Nagar has more than 30 children. Each class has its own class teacher, who teaches most subjects and is the person you speak to first about anything.

Your child also meets subject specialists through the week: for German, computers, STEM, music, art, dance and sports. Counting the class teachers and these specialists together, there is about one teacher for every 10 children across the Primary wing. That figure is for the whole wing. It does not mean several teachers in every class. It means that beyond the class teacher, your child spends real time each week with people who teach one subject and teach it well.

Once a week, in Circle Time, the class teacher sits with her group to talk about friendships, small quarrels and how the week went. Problems get noticed early that way. A nurturing school, to us, is one where small worries are caught before they grow.

How learning works in Grades 1 to 5

We follow the CBSE curriculum, and English is the medium of teaching. Through these years the aim is sound language skills, clear maths concepts and a real grasp of science, built through doing rather than memorising. Our teachers work as facilitators, using activities, projects and presentations alongside the textbook.

Reading gets daily attention. DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read) gives every child 15 minutes of quiet reading in the timetable, over and above library periods. The Shri Reading Programme is a graded reading plan that runs right up to Grade 5, so we can see where each child is and help them move to the next level. Writer's Workshop teaches children to write by actually writing, with less reliance on worksheets.

Confidence matters just as much. Show 'n' Tell gives younger children a friendly platform to speak in front of the class. DEED (Debate, Extempore, Elocution and Drama) has four periods a month in every grade. Research and Referral asks children to look into one topic, record what they find and present it. In Jigsaw Learning, each child learns one piece and teaches it to the group.

That is what we mean by a holistic primary education: reading, numbers and science sit alongside speaking up, working in a team, sport and the arts, every week.

Labs from Grade 1: STEM Lab and Digital Skill Lab

At TSUS Sarabha Nagar, children use our two labs, set up with Myra Academy, from Grade 1.

The STEM Lab covers 17 categories with more than 400 hands-on projects, from robotics and electronics to space science. Coding starts with Scratch and block-based programming. Myra Academy trainers teach the labs from Grade 1 to Grade 10, a full-time trainer is based on our campus, and each topic is introduced in a guided session in the first week of the month. Children then build three projects per topic and are assessed every month. You receive a monthly progress dashboard, and twice a year there is an exhibition day where children show their best work.

The Digital Skill Lab turns screen time into making things: design, simple animation, no-code tools like Canva, and, as children grow, coding and web pages. Skills are introduced step by step to suit each age, and online safety is part of the course from the start. It also has a full-time mentor on campus.

These are the 21st century skills parents ask us about: thinking a problem through, trying again when a circuit does not light up, and using technology to create rather than just scroll.

Languages, and German from Grade 2

Children learn Hindi and Punjabi, and begin German in Grade 2 with a specialist German teacher. Each language is taught in that language, so a Punjabi lesson happens in Punjabi and a German lesson in German. A new language is far less daunting at seven than at fourteen, and children pick up sounds and words with very little fear of getting them wrong.

Sport on a 3-acre campus

Our 3-acre campus in Sarabha Nagar gives children room to run. Primary children can take up swimming in our all-weather pool, skating, pickleball, badminton, football, cricket, judo, karate and basketball. Indoors there is table tennis, chess and yoga.

Clubs from Grade 1

Clubs begin in Grade 1, so children can find what they love early. They choose from sports clubs (karate, football and skating), English elocution including debating, art, dance, music, a STEM club, a digital literacy club and an ICT club for computers and coding. Safety and transport

Parents tell us safety comes before everything else, and it should. Our campus in Sarabha Nagar is covered by CCTV. School buses are air-conditioned and run to wherever our children live in Ludhiana, so there is no distance cap. Every bus has GPS tracking and three adults on board: a driver, a conductor and a female attendant.

Where it leads

A good primary school should set children up for the years ahead. In 2025-26, our Grade X students had a 100% pass rate in the CBSE board exams, and the top score was 96.8%. Those results start with a child in Grade 1 who learns to read with enjoyment and to ask questions without fear.

Come and see a Primary day

The best way to judge a school is to walk through it on a working day. Meet our teachers, look into the labs and classrooms, and bring every question you have. If your child is younger, read about our Early Years. When you are ready, the Admission Process page explains each step.
